Philippine Sports Commission Wants To Have A Say In Forming National Boxing Team

The Philippine Sports Commission wants to have a say in the formation of a national boxing team that will be sent to compete overseas, chairman Richie Garcia said after a meeting with Cebu boxing patron Tony Aldeguer.

Garcia said he has informed the Philippine Olympic Committee about his plan to convince the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines to allow amateur standouts from other stables to participate in a qualifying tournament for meets like the Southeast Asian Games and even the Asian Games.

POC president Jose ‘Peping’ Cojuangco, according to Garcia, was receptive to his idea after the two spoke on Wednesday at Wack Wack.

Garcia met with Aldeguer during a trip to Cebu last week and Aldeguer, who has a stable composed mostly of professional boxers, agreed to lend a hand.

Philippine Azkals Suffer Loss To Laos in Friendly Match

The Philippine national men’s football team failed to end its Southeast Asian tour on a high note, suffering a 2-1 loss to a less experienced Laos side Monday night at the national stadium in Vientiane.

As the Azkals struggled on their attack for the whole game, Laos took advantage of the Filipinos’ defensive miscues by scoring both its goals on penalty kicks.

Despite playing in just its first international friendly this year, Laos showed precision on the pitch for most of the first half against the Azkals, resulting to multiple attempts at goal that ended up in the hands of Philippine goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

Andy Murray wins US Open 2012 Title; Defeated Djokovic

NEW YORK – History-making Andy Murray ended Britain’s 76-year wait for a men’s Grand Slam champion when he beat 2011 winner Novak Djokovic 7-6 (12/10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 in an epic US Open final on Monday.

Murray became Britain’s first major champion since Fred Perry claimed his third American title in 1936, the year the Spanish Civil War started and Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected US president.

In a roller-coaster final, which witnessed a 54-shot rally, numerous 30-stroke exchanges, as well as a record-setting tie-breaker, the 25-year-old Murray held his nerve in a knife-edge final set.

The Olympic champion led 3-0 in the decider, dropped serve but broke again for 5-2 when Djokovic called a medical time-out.

Philippine Azkals Defeated Singapore in Friendly Match

The Philippine national men’s football team bounced back from a lackluster outing to notch a historic victory over home team Singapore, 2-0, Friday night.

The Azkals got a boost from the return of Filipino-German midfielder Stephan Schrock, who assisted on goals by longtime Philippine football stars Chieffy Caligdong and Phil Younghusband. Schrock, who plays for Bundesliga first division squad TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, facilitated the Azkals attack for the whole match.

The Filipinos had a sluggish start as their lousy defense almost allowed Singapore to score in the fourth minute, which was saved by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

But the Azkals recovered quickly on a fortunate goal by Caligdong off a Schrock pass at the eighth minute. The Singaporeans nearly scored the equalizer in the 35th minute, but referees ruled it as an offside.
